With the follicular-unit transplantation method, hair density can be improved by transplanting donor follicles from the back and sides of the head. First, the donor region will be anesthetized and narrow strips of skin will be removed from the scalp. These strips are then microscopically dissected and grafted onto thinning areas. The sutured incision will most likely develop a thin scar, but it can be readily hidden by most haircuts. The procedure takes four to six hours, and recovery time ranges from one to seven days.
