What is Invisalign?
This is an orthodontic treatment to align teeth with a series of clear, removable aligners. This technology was developed as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces. It is manufactured by the Sant Clare based medical-device company Align Technology, Inc. .
Due to the fact, that the aligners are completely transparent, this straightening technique is being used especially for cosmetic reasons: It is difficult to detect these braces especially when compared to traditional wire and bracket braces. This makes the method particularly popular among adults who want to straighten their teeth without the look of traditional metal braces, which are commonly worn by children and adolescents. However, these aligners are also marketed as being more comfortable than braces, because of their removable nature, food can be consumed without the encumbrance of metallic braces.
Also, these treatments have been claimed to be quicker than traditional orthodontics, which has been shown in a large-scale study of 408 patients: traditional appliances in Indiana took an average of 35.92 months with a maximum of 96 months, while Invisalign takes between 12–18 months.
